The Provincial Nominee Business Program

The Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) allows participating provinces and territories to nominate a certain number of foreign nationals each year. It enables participating provinces and territories to select immigrants who have specific skills that contribute to that province/territory's economic and social development.

Study permits

You will generally require a study permit in order to study in Canada.  A few exceptions do apply, and these include family or staff members of accredited foreign representative to Canada, persons studying on a program of studies of six months or less where the program can be completed within this time as well as minor children in Canada whose parents are authorized to work or study. Minor children applying outside Canada will require a study permit.

If you wish to work in Canada, you will generally need to secure a work permit. Some categories of workers, such as Clergy, are exempt from the requirement for a work permit. A confirmed job offer from a Canadian organization is a usual prerequisite for a work permit. Exceptionally, you may be eligible for an open work permit.

Effective December 6, 2011 all new Quebec Skilled Worker applicants are required to submit the results of a standardized test if they wish to obtain selection points for their French or English language proficiency.

Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) has published on their website proposed changes to the current Federal Skilled Worker Programs. While CIC states that the current system is working well, these changes are designed to make improvements on the current structure.
